Collaborations July Update
The Statewide Parent Advocacy Network of NJ (SPAN) is implementing a Parent Leadership
Development Institute for families of young children participating in the early intervention system for
infants and toddlers with or at risk of developmental delays.  SPAN will target three groups of 10
racially, culturally, and socio-economically diverse parents (North, Central, and South) to participate in
leadership training and support designed to prepare them to be effective leaders in early childhood.
This pilot program will work with potential parent leaders to support their ability to impact New Jersey’s
early childhood systems to make them more family centered, inclusive, and culturally sensitive.
Another important goal of the project is to assist state agencies (including the NJ Departments of
Health and Senior Services; Human Services; Education; and the new Department of Children and
Families) as well as professional groups in developing strategies for increasing parent representation
and leadership throughout New Jersey’s early childhood system. Please contact Malia Corde,
Upcoming Calendar continued...
The Social Skills Training Project will be offering Summer Sibling Support
Groups in their Maplewood office for siblings of children with autism spectrum
disorders.  The purpose of the group is to give brothers and sisters of children
with autism spectrum disorders a chance to meet and talk with other kids who
know what it’s like to have a sibling with special needs.  They will have an op-
portunity to talk about the good and not-so-good parts of having a sibling with
autism.  Most importantly, they will have the opportunity to make new friends
and have fun! The sibling groups will run for 6 weeks, beginning the week of
7/17 through the week of 8/21.  Groups will be available for siblings entering
grades two and up.  The exact days and times will be determined based on
the ages and number of participating siblings.  Call Dr. Erica Minde at
973-220-0075 for more information and if you have any questions.
The Early Hearing Detection and Intervention (EHDI) Program has a newly published Pediatric
Hearing Health Care Directory.  The information obtained in this resource manual is to assist parents
and professionals in locating a variety of pediatric audiologic and hearing aid dispensing facilities
throughout the State.  The NJ EHDI Program is dedicated to ensuring early detection of childhood
hearing loss and aims to improve access to newborn hearing health care services for all children in
New Jersey.  The directory is posted as a PDF file on the EDHI web site at www.nj.gov/health/fhs/ehdi
The South Asian Health Project (SAH Project) has launched a
new online initiative.  The project provides opportunities to
develop and implement new and innovative strategies, thinking
"out-of-the box" from traditional approaches to public health
and minority health dialogue. Through its work, SAH Project
hopes to shift dialogue away from disease and treatment to
greater emphasis on healthy lifestyles and prevention as well
as to shift focus away from community needs and deficits to
community resources and assets:
